What year did you graduate?
2001
What was your major?
Computer Science
Do you have any advanced degrees?
Yes; PhD; University of Maryland, College Park
What are you currently doing (professionally)?
Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at NSU
How would you describe DNIMAS to someone who doesn’t know about the program?
DNIMAS is a special program at Norfolk State University that enables undergraduate students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers to develop a fertile basis for life-long professional growth.  In addition to a scholarship, students in the DNIMAS program receive a top-notch education and exposure to a network of upwardly mobile scholars.
How did DNIMAS help you get to where you are?
As a result of the DNIMAS Program, I was able to attain my Bachelor’s degree debt-free, to learn about various internship/fellowship opportunities, and to become convinced that graduate school was the option for me.
What activities did you participate in when you weren’t studying?
I participated in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the DNIMAS Student Association (DSA).
What was your favorite DNIMAS memory?
My favorite DNIMAS memory is starting the Summer Bridge program in August of 1997, meeting my fellow classmates, and setting up my dorm room.  I was so nervous and excited about starting the school year, but I remember those early days fondly!
What do you think would be different about your life if you weren’t in DNIMAS?
I didn’t receive any other financial support for my undergraduate education so I would have definitely had to repay loans.  Also, I’m not sure that I would have decided to go to graduate school were it not for DNIMAS.  DNIMAS has had a significant impact on my life both financially and professionally.
Do you still keep in contact with people from DNIMAS?
Yes!
What advice could you pass on to current DNIMAS scholars?
My main piece of advice to current DNIMAS Scholars is to carefully balance coursework, professional development, involvement in extracurricular activities, and leisure.  I would also suggest that they maximally utilize their resources on campus and that they start considering, now, how they are going to give back to the program and the university after they graduate.
