Posted: April 1st, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: announcements | No Comments »

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone has had a happy and successful 2012 so far. I’d like to take a few moments to congratulate a number of the DNIMAS scholars on their most recent accomplishments.

Starting off with Ms. Chantel Pinnock (Chemistry, Class of 2008). She recently passed her medical school boards. Chantel is currently studying at Temple School of Podiatric Medicine. She hopes to improve the lives of as many people as possible through the mechanism of podiatric medicine.

Ms. Nanna Frimpong (Chemistry, Class of 2008) was accepted into Meharry Medical College. After medical school and training Nanna wants to work in a clinic as an infectious disease physician caring for underserved populations. She is anticipating specializing in HIV primary care and, wants to conduct epidemiological research in order to determine/highlight why HIV related health disparities exist in minority populations. Lastly, she wants to increase the minority representation in clinical research studies.

Mr. Kelvin Turner (Biology, Class of 2007) was accepted into Ross Medical School. Kelvin will be starting medical school in May. Kelvin wants to one day either a surgical oncologist or a humanitarian physician. He is interested in one day traveling throughout the world in service of others.

Last but not least Ms. DaShaun Joseph (Computer Engineering, Class of 2007) was recently awarded the 2012 Alumni Extension Member of the Year, by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). DaShaun is being celebrated because of her outstanding contributions to the Alumni Extension and NSBE in the areas of leadership; membership recruitment and retention; and the advancement of NSBE programs DaShaun will be recognized at this year’s NSBE Annual Conference.

In other news, while celebrating NSU’s fantastic March Madness weekend in the NCAA tournament, DNIMAS was interviewing students for the class of 2016. Over 40 high school seniors were interviewed. The interviews went really well, and were conducted by NSU faculty, DNIMAS Alumni, and current DNIMAS students. DNIMAS is continuing to attract the best and the brightest from all over. If you’d be interested in helping out next year, please contact the DNIMAS office.

There are less than 2 months away from graduation. This year there are 26 graduating seniors. We are accepting donations so that we can continue the tradition of sending the seniors off with a little gift. We are looking for donations of $10 or $12 dollars. $12 covers the price of the book, and $10 for gift cards. Donations are being accepted via paypal to dnimas.alumni@gmail.com. If you’d rather send check send an email to dnimas.alumni@gmail.com and we’ll get back to you with an address.

We are so proud of all of our DNIMAS Alumni and will continue to provide updates on your impact on the world.

Behold the Green and Gold,
Douglas Jones II, DNIMAS 2007

Thoughts on the 25th Anniversary Celebration

Posted: September 22nd, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: announcements | Tags: | No Comments »

Many people have been asking me how the Anniversary turned out. Here are my thoughts.

It was really really nice. Lets start from the beginning, the ceremonies kicked off with a cheese and wine mixer in the New Student Union building. The new union is really nice. I suggest everyone make a trip back to the school so that they can see it. It’s 100x better than the old one. The mixer was ok (the spicy cheese was nasty), it was a chance for everyone to mix and mingle. Mostly in here you were able to get reacquainted with classmates and other DNIMAS Alumni. If I wasn’t shy i would’ve made more of this event. It wasn’t much of an ice breaker, but it was good for catching up with people before the banquet.

The banquet was setup really nicely. The meal for the night was baked chicken, greens, mashed potatoes, with salad and sweet potato pie and chocolate cake (which was really good). The keynote speaker for the night was Howard Adams. Dr. Adams reminded us why we need to give back and support our institutions. He also reminded us that we can overcome any challenges we put our minds to. We got to hear from former school president Dr. Harrison B. Wilson about how the program came to be. Next, each Alumni member who was present was announced and received an award.

The 2nd day’s events consisted of students presenting research that they were currently doing or had completed over the past summer. The presentations made me feel really old, because for most of the presentations I listened to, I had no idea what the students were talking about. I wonder if this is how most people felt after listening to my presentations when I was in still in school. After the presentations we had a panel discussion with students and Alumni members. The students asked questions and received good advice and information from the panelists and other Alumni members in the crowd. After Alumni hung around a little longer to help answer any lingering questions the students had.  After the panel we enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, and barbecue chicken in the pre-game tailgate, before watching the NSU football team stomp Virginia State 51-28.

Overall all of the events of the weekend were really nice. There were about 40-50 Alumni present. Most were from the earlier DNIMAS classes. Their continued support of the program is an example for all to follow. I would’ve like to have had more time to mix and mingle with both the Alumni and the current students. I was able to do some networking, but it would’ve been nice to have more opportunities.

I hope we don’t wait 25 years to do this again. It was a good experience and one that will definitely bring a boost to the program.
